Every March 8, when International Women's Day is approaching, Italian men will carefully prepare bunches of yellow Mimosa (acacia flowers) to give to the women around them, including their partners, daughters, friends, colleagues and elder female relatives. This yellow mimosa is known as the "woman flower" in Italy, and there is a sad and touching story behind it.

On March 25, 1911, a tragic fire broke out in the Triangle Factory in New York, killing about 140 female garment workers, most of whom were Italian immigrants. On this scorched land, small yellow flowers-mimosa-are growing tenaciously! In order to commemorate these women who still insist on working in harsh environments, Italians chose mimosa as a memorial flower.


During the festival, mimosa flowers bloom in clusters and sway in the wind, symbolizing vigorous development. Yellow represents vitality, strength and joy, in memory of those women who have dedicated themselves to the struggle for liberation, and reminds us to work hard to build an equal and just world.

The first International Women's Day in Italy began in 1922 and was held by the Italian Women's Union. Every year on this day, the Union organizes various marches and demonstrations to advocate that all women unite to oppose oppression and fight for democracy and freedom. Today, women have been completely liberated, respected, have autonomy, and are even equal to men. They no longer need to protest against oppression. Therefore, today's International Women's Day has become a true women's festival. On this day, Italian women will put aside family chores and go out for dinner and entertainment with friends to relax!
